Gutter Cleaning

Gutter cleaning is a job which is often neglected. For most homeowners, gutters remain out of sight and out of mind, but ignoring clogged gutters can have serious consequences. When water overshoots your gutters due to the buildup of debris, the water will fall at the base of your home. This can cause a whole host of problems like landscape erosion, flooding, foundation issues, and mold growth. Clogged gutters are also unsightly, and can cause roof leaks. The increased weight can cause the gutters to pull loose, which can lead to rot behind the fascia or trim. It is best not to ignore clogged gutters, and to stick to a regular cleaning schedule.

Wondering if it may be time to clean your gutters?  A good indication is overflow from the rain, or your downspouts may not have any water draining out of them. This means you have clogged gutters. You may also begin to see the debris building up over the top of your gutter, in which case, you have badly clogged gutters which need to be taken care of immediately.

Although there are many new innovative tools to help clean your gutters, the standard practice involves using a ladder, hose, gloves, disposal bag, and a garden trowel or scoop. When cleaning the gutters, it is important to wear gloves and ensure the ladder is always secure. A ladder stabilizer or stand-off can be used to prevent dents and damage to the gutters or siding.

Begin at the downspout with a trowel and hose and ensure the downspout is clear from debris. If a downspout is plugged, it may have to be dis-assembled and cleaned. Scoop and dispose of debris and then rinse the trough clean.  After you’ve cleared the muck, flush the gutters and downspouts with a garden hose.  This is also a great way to spot any leaks.

Regular gutter cleaning is vital for your gutter system to maintain optimum performance. Once in the spring and once in the fall is typically enough for most homeowners. However, if your home is surrounded by trees, you may need to clean them even more often. The average home should be cleaned twice a year. Alway remember that gutter cleaning can be dangerous and should be performed by a capable person.  When in doubt call on a professional.
